Drafted principally by George Mason and adopted on June 12, 1776, the Virginia Declaration of Rights asserted that people possess inherent rights and that political power ultimately derives from them. Its language concerning liberty, representative government, freedom of the press, due process, and religious freedom would influence both the Declaration of Independence and the later United States Bill of Rights.
