A powerful expression of perseverance in the face of uncertainty, Thomas Paine’s The American Crisis gave words to a generation struggling for independence. Featuring the enduring line “These are the times that try men’s souls,” this historically inspired print is designed for those who value courage, conviction, liberty, and the ideas behind the American founding.
Written in December 1776 at one of the darkest moments of the American Revolution, Paine’s words were meant not simply to describe the crisis, but to strengthen the resolve of those living through it. This piece preserves that sense of determination in a design inspired by early American broadsides and printed documents.

Published on December 19, 1776, The American Crisis No. 1 appeared at a precarious moment for the Revolution. The Continental Army had suffered serious setbacks, enlistments were nearing their end, and the future of independence was far from certain. Paine contrasted the “summer soldier and the sunshine patriot” with those willing to remain steadfast when liberty demanded sacrifice.
The print centers his most remembered words—“These are the times that try men’s souls”—while surrounding them with a longer passage reflecting on tyranny, freedom, perseverance, and the cost of things worth defending.
With its parchment ground, weathered navy and burgundy, antique gold, and engraved imagery, the piece has the character of a document collected over generations. It fits naturally in a home library, office, history classroom, or traditional living space.
Pair it with prints featuring the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, George Washington, Patrick Henry, or other writings of the American Revolution to create a collection centered on the words and ideas that shaped the founding era.
A piece that reflects the conviction that principles matter most when they are difficult to uphold.
