Yeats approaches the familiar story of the Magi from an unusual direction. Rather than portraying them simply at the manger, he imagines them still searching—solemn figures whose encounter with Christ has awakened a desire to understand more. References to both Bethlehem and Calvary give the short poem a remarkable sense of spiritual and intellectual depth.
This interpretation surrounds the poem with a painterly journey toward Bethlehem beneath a brilliant star, while the ethereal figures above suggest the Magi as they persist in the poet’s “mind’s eye.” It is particularly suited to a library, study, living room, or thoughtfully collected Christmas display.
Pair it with other works of Christian poetry, classic literature, or Nativity-inspired art to create a collection that reflects not simply the season, but the ideas of wonder, faith, and mystery behind it.
Christmas art for those who want to contemplate the story as well as celebrate it.
