In 1798, President John Adams called the American people to a national day of “humiliation, fasting and prayer,” asking the nation to acknowledge Providence, seek forgiveness, and pray for peace and protection. This historically inspired print preserves the language of that presidential proclamation for those drawn to the religious convictions, civic responsibilities, and ideas that shaped the early American republic.

Issued during John Adams’s presidency, the proclamation reflects an early American tradition of public calls to prayer during periods of national uncertainty. Its language invokes Almighty God and Providence while calling Americans toward repentance, religious virtue, civic duty, and prayers for peace.
More than a presidential document, it offers a window into the way questions of faith, morality, government, and national responsibility were expressed during the founding generation.
