George Washington Thanksgiving Proclamation Art Print | Autumn History Quote | Home Decor

A reflection on gratitude, providence, and the responsibilities of a young nation, George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation called Americans to set aside a day for public thanksgiving and prayer. This richly illustrated print preserves Washington’s historic words within the colors and abundance of autumn—designed for those who value American history, faith, and the deeper meaning of Thanksgiving.

Issued during Washington’s first year as president, the proclamation offers a remarkable glimpse into the ideals of the early republic. Its words turn toward gratitude for liberty, peaceful government, knowledge, and the many blessings Washington believed worthy of national remembrance.

Washington issued the proclamation on October 3, 1789, following a request from Congress. In it, he recommended that Thursday, November 26 be devoted to thanksgiving and prayer, calling upon Americans to acknowledge divine providence and give thanks for the establishment of their new government, civil and religious liberty, national peace, and other blessings.

The design closes with Psalm 107:1, reinforcing the theme running throughout the proclamation: gratitude understood not merely as a seasonal sentiment, but as a deliberate act of remembrance.

Warm ivory and antique gold are joined by deep orange, rust, ochre, olive, and touches of blue, giving the print the appearance of a collected historical document surrounded by the abundance of the harvest. Display it throughout autumn or make it part of your family’s Thanksgiving traditions, where Washington’s words can be read and considered year after year.

It pairs especially well with Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation or other American founding documents and presidential writings, creating a collected display centered on the ideas, faith, and history behind American civic life.

A piece for those who want Thanksgiving in their home to reflect not only the season, but the history and meaning behind it.
