The First Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia in 1774 as the relationship between Great Britain and the American colonies approached a decisive turning point. Prayer accompanied those early deliberations, reflecting a worldview in which questions of government, liberty, moral responsibility, and Providence were closely connected.
This piece draws upon that founding-era tradition, presenting a prayer that asks for understanding of rights, firmness in defending them, wisdom and moderation in public conduct, unity in Christian love, and faithfulness to the cause of liberty. The surrounding imagery reinforces those themes without overwhelming the words themselves.
