In September 1774, delegates from twelve colonies assembled in Philadelphia for the First Continental Congress, confronting questions that would ultimately reshape the course of American history. Before their deliberations, the Rev. Jacob Duché offered a prayer appealing for divine guidance and asking that prejudice, self-interest, and faction not divide those gathered together.
Its language gives the piece a significance beyond the historical moment. The prayer asks for moderation and wisdom, preservation of liberty, unity of purpose, and deliberations directed toward the good of the country—a compelling glimpse into the intellectual and religious world surrounding the American founding.
