On June 28, 1787, as disagreements threatened the progress of the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin addressed George Washington and his fellow delegates. Recalling the prayers offered during the struggle for independence, Franklin argued that the same reliance upon Providence should accompany their attempt to build a lasting government.
His appeal offers a revealing glimpse into the intellectual and religious world surrounding the American founding—one in which questions of government, human limitation, Providence, and responsibility were considered together.
