A striking piece of early American political imagery, Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die” design captures a simple but enduring idea: divided colonies were vulnerable, but united they could become something stronger. This historically inspired print is designed for those drawn to the arguments, symbols, and ideas that shaped early America.

First published by Franklin in 1754, the segmented snake became one of colonial America’s most recognizable political images. Presented here in an aged, richly detailed style, it brings the character of an early printed broadside into the home.

Franklin originally created the image during the French and Indian War, decades before the Declaration of Independence. The individual sections of the snake represented colonies whose security depended upon cooperation. Accompanied by the stark words “JOIN, or DIE,” the image made a complicated political argument immediately understandable.

Its meaning evolved as American history unfolded. During the growing conflict with Great Britain, the symbol was revived as an expression of colonial unity and became closely associated with the Revolutionary generation.

That history makes this more than an early piece of Americana. It is also an example of the power of persuasion—an image capable of communicating an argument about unity with extraordinary economy.

The aged beige, black, brown, and muted colonial tones give the artwork the appearance of something preserved from an eighteenth-century print shop. It fits naturally in a home library, office, history classroom, or traditional Americana collection.

Pair it with Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” speech, Thomas Paine’s American Crisis, the Declaration of Independence, early American flags, or other Revolutionary Era prints to build a collection around the words and symbols that shaped the founding generation.

A piece that reflects one of the founding era’s most persistent ideas: strength through union.
