Passed by the Congress of the Confederation on July 13, 1787, the Northwest Ordinance established a system of government for the territory northwest of the Ohio River and created a path by which territories could eventually enter the Union as states. Its provisions concerning religious liberty, trial by jury, education, and the prohibition of slavery within the territory made it one of the consequential legislative acts of the founding era.
The parchment, deep navy, burgundy, and antique-gold palette gives the piece the character of an old American library or historical study. It is particularly suited to an office, living room, entryway, bedroom, or dorm, while its substantive historical content also makes it a thoughtful addition to a homeschool or traditional classroom.
As part of The Founding Documents Series, the Northwest Ordinance can stand on its own or be displayed alongside the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, Constitution, and Bill of Rights—building a collection that tells a broader story of how American government took shape.
A piece that reflects an interest not simply in American history, but in the documents and ideas from which the nation developed.
