A reflection on gratitude in the midst of hardship, Abraham Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863 called a divided nation to recognize its blessings and set apart a national day of thanksgiving and praise. This richly illustrated print preserves Lincoln’s words within the warmth and abundance of the harvest season—a piece that brings together American history, faith, and the enduring practice of gratitude.
Issued during the Civil War, Lincoln’s proclamation acknowledged both the nation’s suffering and the blessings that remained. His words offer a particularly meaningful reminder that thanksgiving is not dependent upon ease or abundance, but can be an intentional act even during uncertain times.

The proclamation carries particular historical weight because Lincoln issued it in October 1863, while the United States remained engulfed in the Civil War. Yet its language repeatedly turns toward providence, humility, gratitude, and the hope for national healing.
The print closes with the words of Psalm 107:1: “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” Together with Lincoln’s proclamation, the verse gives the piece a sense of gratitude rooted in something deeper than the season itself.
With its warm ivory ground and rich shades of burnt orange, russet, gold, brown, and olive, this piece works naturally in a traditional kitchen or dining room throughout the autumn months. It can also become part of a larger collection of American founding documents, presidential writings, historical proclamations, and expressions of faith—allowing a gallery wall to tell a broader story about the ideas and convictions that shaped American life.
A piece for those who see Thanksgiving not simply as a holiday, but as an enduring practice of gratitude and remembrance.
